part 7 - LukeWarm or Lost

What does it mean to be truly on fire for God, and how do we know if we have drifted into a dangerous spiritual numbness? Drawing from the letters of Jesus to the seven churches in Revelation chapter 3, we are brought face to face with one of the most unsettling self-examination questions a believer can ask: am I lukewarm? The church at Laodicea had everything going for it on the surface. Resources, reputation, religious activity. Yet Jesus delivered a stunning diagnosis, comparing their spiritual condition to water that is neither hot nor cold, something so unpleasant it makes him want to spit it out. The imagery would have hit the original audience with full force, since Laodicea was famous for its aqueduct water that arrived only slightly warm and unpleasant by the time it reached the city. The spiritual parallel is impossible to miss. We can be busy, comfortable, and outwardly successful while Jesus stands outside the door of our own hearts knocking. This message challenges us to stop measuring our spiritual health by outward appearances or past experiences and instead ask honestly what our condition looks like to the one who sees everything. The good news woven throughout this sobering message is that the same Jesus who delivers the hard diagnosis also offers the cure, and the door is still open.
