What does it mean to stand for truth in a world that constantly shifts beneath our feet? This message takes us into the heart of that question using a vivid image from the beach: standing in the surf as the tide comes in, feeling the sand wash out from under our feet, and drifting without ever intending to. That slow, almost imperceptible drift is exactly how compromise works in our lives and in the church. Drawing from Revelation chapter 2 and the letter to the church at Pergamum, we are confronted with a Jesus who knows exactly where we live, who sees the pressures we face, and who still calls us to hold the line. The church at Pergamum was courageous in many ways, remaining loyal even when one of their own was martyred for his faith, yet Jesus had something against them: they were tolerating false teaching and moral compromise in their midst. The sobering takeaway is that past faithfulness does not excuse present compromise. We can be right in ninety-nine areas of life and still be drifting in one, and that one open door is all the enemy needs. The message calls us to be thermostats rather than thermometers, setting the spiritual temperature around us rather than simply reflecting the culture we live in. Truth is not a matter of personal preference or cultural consensus. It originates with God, it is unchanging, and it is the firm foundation on which we are called to build our lives.
